Grant Description
The purpose of this project is to implement recovery actions for island rush-rose on Catalina Island, California to reduce threats to the species and allow it to increase in abundance and distribution. Specific tasks are as follows: 1)Repair and maintain existing exclosures to protect populations from browsing; 2)Survey other suitable habitat to determine if other populations occur on the island, and document with field survey forms if found; 3) Monitor the status of existing populations, including documentation of numbers of individuals, aerial extent of population, demography of the population, threats observed, and other relevant information; 4) establish long-term demographic monitoring to assist in understanding the life history phases of the species; and 5) seed collection and storage. The total project cost is $46,475 that will be allocated in a one-year increment over the three-year period of the grant. A cost share is not a requirement of this program. The Catalina Island Conservancy is providing a cost share/matching of $33,000, including the use of field vehicles, fuel and field equipment, salaries for supporting activities, and seed storage facilities.
