Grant Description

More than 1 billion people worldwide suffer from a group of painful and debilitating diseases collectively referred to as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). These diseases disproportionately impact poor, rural, and marginalized populations, and contribute to compromised mental and physical development, childhood malnutrition, reduced school enrollment and performance, and diminished economic productivity. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) focuses on control and elimination of seven NTDs that can be targeted with preventive chemotherapy, including: lymphatic filariasis (LF), blinding trachoma, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and three soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH). In addition to causing sickness, several of these diseases can also lead to severe and lifelong morbidity and disability. To address morbidity and disability caused by blinding trachoma and LF, USAID through its NTD Program seeks to award a five-year, $35 million Cooperative Agreement to support countries to increase access to morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) services for blinding trachoma and LF. This activity will provide USAID, the Bureau for Global Health (GH), and the NTD Program with assistance to strengthen MMDP components within national NTD plans and achieve elimination goals for blinding trachoma in countries already supported by USAIDуs NTD Program. This activity will assist countries in planning, implementing, and monitoring the scale-up of high-quality treatment and care services for affected individuals.
