Grant Description

Purpose. This FOA solicits Cooperative Research Demonstration and Dissemination Projects (U18) grant applications that propose to advance and improve measures of childrens healthcare quality. The FOA implements Section 401(a) of the Childrens Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) of 2009 (Public Law 111-3), which amends title XI (42 U.S.C. 1301 et seq.) by inserting after section 1139 the new section 1139A(b): Advancing and Improving Pediatric Quality Measures. This section calls for the establishment of a pediatric quality measures program to: improve and strengthen the initial core child health care quality measures established by the Secretary under (42 U.S.C. 1301 Sec. 1139A(a)); expand on existing pediatric quality measures used by public and private health care purchasers and advance the development of such new and emerging quality measures; and increase the portfolio of evidence-based, consensus pediatric quality measures available to public and private purchasers of childrens healthcare services, providers, and consumers. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the AHRQ Cooperative Research Demonstration and Dissemination Projects (U18) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. AHRQ expects $55.070 million to be made available for awards under this announcement over a 4 year period, from fiscal year 2010 through fiscal year 2013. Approximately 7 to 9 awards are anticipated. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. The maximum annual award can be no greater than $2 million. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
