Grant Description
The NIH recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity and re-entry in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences research workforce. The NIH expects efforts to diversify the workforce to lead to the recruitment of the most talented researchers from all groups, to improve the quality of the educational and training environment, to balance and broaden the perspective in setting research priorities, to improve the ability to recruit subjects from minority and other health disparity populations into clinical research protocols, and to improve the Nations capacity to address and eliminate health disparities. There is also a need to ensure a pathway for re-entry into academics for these individuals who, because of these interruptions, may have unique perspectives on problem solving, adaptability to new situations, and ability to bring innovative insights into the academic research environment that can make a significant contribution to the scientific workforce.
