Grant Description
Purpose. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) solicits Stage 2 Specialized Center grants (P50) for the NHLBI Translational Research Implementation Program (TRIP). The overall objective of the entire two-staged NHLBI TRIP is to accelerate translation of promising new therapeutic interventions derived from fundamental research discoveries for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular, lung, and blood diseases through the planning and execution of well-designed clinical trials to demonstrate safety and efficacy. Previously awarded Stage 1 planning studies, funded either as RC2 or P20 awards, supported the planning and development of Stage 2 specialized center (P50) applications now being solicited to support the conduct of the safety and efficacy trials recommended for support following peer review. The present request for Stage 2 (P50) applications for the conduct of the clinical trials planned and developed during Stage 1 is limited to successful Stage 1 applicants. Thus, this is a limited competition open only to: (1) recipients of NIH Research and Research Infrastructure Grand Opportunities (RC2) awards submitted in response to the NHLBI Translational Research Implementation Program (TRIP) topic and (2) recipients of the NHLBI Cardiac Translational Research Implementation Program (C-TRIP) (P20) awards. Support during Stage 2 TRIP is expected to provide up to $1,515,000 direct costs per year for up to five years per award. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Specialized Center grants (P50) award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NHLBI expects to commit $13,635,000 per year to support the award of up to 6 five-year-long Stage 2 (P50) TRIP awards.
