Grant Description
Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to improve our understanding of how cells respond to their environment and to develop accurate assays and methods to understand how organogenesis may instruct the creation of functional 3D engineered cellular aggregates. This program will require collaborations of scientists from two or more disciplines such as developmental biology, computational science and systems biology, cell biology, tissue engineering, chemistry, physics, or organ physiology. Use of the multiple PI mechanism is strongly encouraged. Multidisciplinary investigations are needed to demonstrate reproducible recapitulation in the laboratory for events such as differentiation, proliferation, and senescence for tissue repair and regeneration. Repairing, replacing, or regenerating tissue will occur by translating fundamental knowledge from biology into engineering systems that support tissue formation, either in vitro or in vivo. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01 award mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-HL-11-026, that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit $3,875,000 total costs in FY2011 to fund up to 5 awards, with a total cost commitment of $16,274,000 over the 4-year period. The NIBIB intends to commit $500,000 total costs in FY2011 for this and its companion announcement (RFA-HL-11-026), with a total commitment of $2,000,000 over the four year period of this announcement and its companion FOA (RFA-HL-026). NIBIB intends to fund up to 2 R21s or 1 R01 under this funding arrangement.
