Grant Description

Purpose. The purpose of this FOA issued by the NHLBI, National Institutes of Health, is to invite applications to participate in the MAPGen consortium. This consortium seeks to utilize evolving knowledge of cellular and molecular networks to define common mechanism-associated traits across organ systems. The ultimate goal is to re-define disease at the level of pathogenetic mechanisms and phenotype individuals based on pathobiology, rather than clinical presentation. This approach will provide the basis for the development of mechanism-based strategies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment in individual patients. This FOA encourages applications for research centers and runs in parallel with a separate FOA that solicits applications for the MAPGen Knowledge Base and Coordination Center (MAPGenKB) (see HL-11-004). Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Cooperative Agreement (U01) award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total amount of funding to be awarded for MAPGen (the Research Centers and the MAPGenKB) will be a maximum of $25 million for the project period. It is anticipated that 6-8 Research Centers, under this FOA, and 1 MAPGenKB under the related FOA (see HL-11-004) will be awarded.
