Grant Description
Purpose. This FOA, issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), solicits cooperative agreement grant applications from institutions to conduct Coordinating Functions for the Childhood Obesity Prevention and Treatment Research Consortium and runs parallel with a separate Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that solicits applications for 4 awards for clinical trials (see FOA HL-10-004 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HL-10-004.html)). For the purposes of this FOA (RFA HL-10-005) and RFA HL-10-004, prevention of obesity is defined as prevention of excess weight in non-overweight youth (primary prevention), as well as prevention of additional weight gain in those already overweight or obese. Treatment is defined as reduction of weight (including weight loss or weight maintenance during linear height growth) in those already obese or severely obese. The whole program is designed to promote collaboration, coordination and exchange of scientific information among institutions, and partnerships with local, state and national agencies. The ultimate goal is to improve childrens health by preventing obesity-related morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.
