Grant Description

Purpose. This FOA, issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), solicits cooperative agreement grant applications from institutions to conduct randomized controlled trials to test innovative interventions that address issues immediately germane to the childhood obesity epidemic and runs parallel with a separate Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that solicits applications a Research Coordinating Unit (see RFA HL-10-005 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HL-10-005.html)). The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to fund randomized trials testing intervention approaches to prevent excess weight gain in non-overweight youth and in those already overweight, and/or to reduce weight in obese and severely obese youth. For the purposes of this FOA (RFA-HL-10-004) and RFA-HL-10-005, prevention of obesity is defined as prevention of excess weight in non-overweight youth (primary prevention), as well as prevention of additional weight gain in those already overweight or obese. Treatment is defined as reduction of weight (including weight loss or weight maintenance during linear height growth) in those already obese or severely obese. The whole program is designed to promote collaboration, coordination and exchange of scientific information among institutions, and partnerships with local, state and national agencies. The ultimate goal is to improve childrens health by preventing obesity-related morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. This FOA targets young children, pre-adolescents and adolescents and encourages novel interventions. Applications will be accepted from multi-disciplinary research teams, networks or collaborative groups that are already established or will be formed to conduct high-quality, transdisciplinary research in childhood obesity prevention and treatment. The ultimate goal is to improve childrens health by preventing obesity-related morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular and other chronic diseases
