Grant Description
-Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications in a specific area of stem cell research, the blood stem cell niche, an area critical to advancing stem cell biology and its applications to cellular therapeutics including hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.ÊThis FOA is being initiated to foster collaborative research projects and insightful approaches to dissect the cellular components and factors involved in the hematopoietic stem cell niche.ÊDevelopment of conditional genetic knock-out models to test the role of factors in specific cell lineages and imaging technology to facilitate following stem cell engraftment in the niche in vivo are integral to this initiative. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH research project (R01) grant mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit up to a total of $3.0 million in FY 2009 to support an estimated 5-8 meritorious projects that are responsive to this FOA.ÊAwards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
