Grant Description
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from Institutions/organization that propose to determine the optimal research design as well as collect pilot data on feasibility and implementation for a randomized clinical trial of the effects of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes or in cardiovascular, lung and sleep diseases in people. All studies should focus on subjects with a BMI of 30 to 40. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Grant R01 grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. It is anticipated dependent upon the number and scientific merit of applications received that NIDDK will fund 3 to 4 awards focused on diabetes at a total cost of up to $2 million per year over 3 years; it is anticipated that NHLBI will fund up to 2 to 3 awards focused on cardiovascular, lung or sleep disorders.
