Grant Description
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites grant applications to establish an International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) program to provide a multidisciplinary research approach to malaria control and prevention through the integration of findings from clinical and field research. The overarching goal of the ICEMR program is to establish research centers in malaria-endemic settings that will provide the necessary knowledge, tools, and evidence-based strategies for use by government organizations and health care institutions. Each application in response to this FOA must include: (1) a Research Component consisting of three or more individual research projects one in the areas of Epidemiology; and two or more in the area of Transmission and/or Pathogenesis and Diagnosis; (2) a Training/Career Development Program Component; (3) a Special Projects Component; and (4) an Administrative Core and a Data Management/Biostatistics Core that support the work within and among the ICEMR program. This program is not intended to support research which can be conducted primarily in U.S. institutions. Foreign Institutions are eligible to apply. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH multi-project (U19) cooperative agreement grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIAID intends to commit $13.8M in total costs in fiscal year 2010 to fund 7-12 new grants in response to this FOA.
