Grant Description
Purpose. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health, invites Exploratory/Developmental Research Project (R21) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to study immune defense mechanisms and immune regulation at mucosal surfaces including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts. The goal is to gain new insights that will facilitate future development of vaccines and immunotherapies to protect mucosal surfaces from infection and inflammation. Investigators who have no prior history of receiving independent funding in this field are encouraged to apply. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support basic and applied research that contributes to understanding broadly applicable host mechanisms of mucosal immune defense. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIAID anticipates awarding a total of $5 million in FY 2009 to fund 18 to 25 awards for up to 2 years.
