Grant Description
Purpose. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to track cell lineages and to determine cell life spans in normal tissue homeostasis and in response to injury or disease in the elderly. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support basic and applied research projects for the determination of cell life spans and cell fates in various tissues of aged mammals, specifically in humans or in model organisms (e.g., rodents, dogs or nonhuman primates). Applications will address the quantitative analysis of cell turnover rates and cell lineage tracing in one or more cell types. Such systems should be applicable to determine the age-dependent changes in cellular turnover and fates in tissues that lose function with advanced age. Thus, applications should propose to study cell lineages and turnover in healthy aging, and may also propose to study these processes in response to acute injury or other perturbations (e.g., chronic illness). Application and submission requirements, and peer review processes will follow NIH guidelines (outlined in this FOA). Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01 award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIA budgets up to $2.0 million in Fiscal Year 2011 (FY2011) to fund up to 5 meritorious projects that are responsive to this FOA. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
