Grant Description

Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications from small business concerns (SBCs) that propose to stimulate the discovery and development of biomarkers of alcohol consumption, biomarkers for early detection of alcohol-induced organ damage, and biomarkers of fetal alcohol exposure. Approaches using high throughput technologies leading to the discovery of biomarker signatures are encouraged. Proposals leading to rapid translation of candidates to marketable clinically useful biomarker assays are also encouraged. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the SBIR (R43/R44) grant mechanisms for Phase I, Phase II, and Fast-Track applications and runs in parallel with FOA RFA-AA-11-005, which solicits applications under the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) (R41) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The estimated amount of funds available for support of 2 to 4 projects awarded as a result of this announcement is $2M for fiscal year 2011. Future year amounts will depend on annual appropriations.
