Grant Description

The goal of this research and monitoring project is twofold: 1) to investigate and document tributary (Price River) habitat use of pikeminnow, and 2) explore movement patterns and habitat use of the three species within the Price River, while obtaining ancillary information on population abundance and distribution. The proposed research and monitoring project represents a collaborative effort between the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Utah State University, and the USGS, Utah Cooperative Fisheries and Wildlife Unit to address research and monitoring needs to guide conservation and recovery planning for imperiled desert fishes threatened by extinction. This is a three-year project. We will combine field sampling, active mark/ recapture techniques, and active (raft) and passive PIT tag detection antennae to meet our objectives. If extensive tributary habitat use is documented for pikeminnow, future efforts will need to include an investigation of spawning potential for pikeminnow, and the development of flow recommendations for all native species.
