Grant Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently revising the Razorback Sucker Recovery Goals document (USFWS 2002) to include the Lake Mead razorback sucker population as one of the recovery populations for the lower basin. The fish reared through this effort at the NDOW, Lake Mead State Fish Hatchery will support conservation of razorback sucker in Lake Mead, allow for research opportunities using Lake Mead origin razorback sucker, provide additional rearing capacity as a contingency to rear razorback suckers from other source populations for Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program (LCR MSCP) Fish Augmentation, provide additional rearing capacity for native fish species to be determined, and assist with future native fish recovery actions. This effort will be accomplished through a one year grant agreement with the option to extend. The goal is to collect annually up to 4,000 wild razorback sucker larvae from Lake Mead, Nevada/Arizona and rear up to 3,000 Lake Mohave razorback sucker over the grant agreement period, to contribute to the conservation and future management of the Lake Mead razorback sucker population and to assist the LCR MSCP in meeting program objectives for the conservation and management of razorback sucker and other native fishes within the MSCP program area. Collection targets for any year may be dependent on the ability to capture wild razorback sucker larvae from Lake Mead. This project will be accomplished through a one year grant agreement with the option to extend.
