Grant Description
-Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is seeking medication discovery and development research grant applications focused on the treatment of patients who are simultaneously addicted to multiple substances, including alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs and/or prescription drugs.ÊNovel proposals for clinical or preclinical testing of potential medications, as well as relevant animal model development and medicinal chemistry efforts are encouraged.Ê -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PAS-08-186, that encourages applications under the NIH Research Projects (R01) grant mechanism.Ê -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. During Fiscal Year 2009, the estimated amount of funds available to support projects under this FOA and the parallel R01 FOA (PAS-08-186) is $3,000,000.ÊBecause the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary.ÊGiven the likely range of budgets, it is anticipated that 4 to 7 awards could be made.ÊThe availability of funds and the number of awards in future years will depend upon annual appropriations.Ê
