Grant Description
Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is intended to support research in which an unpredictable opportunity has arisen to collect human or animal biosample baseline or exposure data (e.g., following natural or made-made disasters, health care policy changes; etc). The distinctive element of the project should be the need for empirical study for a situation that was not foreseeable and is achievable only if begun within a short time frame. The R21 mechanism is intended to encourage new exploratory and developmental research projects, and applications submitted to this FOA would be expected to conduct innovative research that will lay the foundation for improved population studies concerning the effect of environmental agents on health. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-10-083, that encourages applications under the R03 mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
