Grant Description

Purpose. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. The R03 is intended to support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. This FOA issued by the National Institute on Aging and the Office of Dietary Supplementssolicits Small Research Grant (R03) applications proposing to study bioenergetic factors underlying increased fatigability and activity limitations in aging. Increased fatigability is a significant cause of restricted physical and cognitive activity in older adults. Alterations in bioenergeticsthe production and utilization of energy, and the regulation of these processesmay contribute significantly to increased fatigability. This FOA encourages applications that propose to 1) elucidate specific alterations in bioenergetics related to increased fatigability and activity limitations; 2) develop and evaluate improved measures of fatigability related to bioenergetics; 3) evaluate interventions for increased fatigability and activity limitations that target alterations in bioenergetics and lead to improved quality of life. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-09-190, that encourages applications under the Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism, and PA-09-191, that encourages applications under the Exploratory/Developmental Research (R21) mechanism.
