Grant Description
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed to foster innovative collaborative research to characterize the structural properties of taste and smell receptors. Additional emphasis is placed on the characterization of the interactions among odors, pheromones, and taste substances with their cognate receptors, and the identity of the critical ligand-receptor binding sites that determine sensitivity and selectivity. One aim of this FOA is to encourage collaborations among chemosensory molecular biologists and biochemists with expertise in the isolation and characterization of membrane proteins, and biophysicists familiar with crystallography, NMR and other analytical tools used in structural analyses. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-09-058, that encourages applications using the R01 mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
