Grant Description
-Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), invites applications for research projects that investigate the effects of Erythropoietin (EPO) on tumor cell growth. EPO has been widely used to relieve the anemia associated with renal failure. In addition, EPO and other erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) have recently been used to treat the anemia associated with cancer chemotherapy. However, several clinical trials involving administration of ESAs, have suggested that ESAs may accelerate tumor progression and increase mortality in cancer patients. It is therefore important to understand the biology of ESAs on tumor cell growth and apoptosis. The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate high quality research on the effects of ESAs on tumor cell biology and tumor progression. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA uses the NIH research project R01 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-09-024 that encourages applications under the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) Grant mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
