Grant Description

Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) encourages Research Project Grant (R03) applications on the economics of prevention and treatment services for drug and alcohol abuse.ÊSuch research projects might emphasize any of the following subjects: (1) financing and purchasing of drug and alcohol treatment and prevention services, including studies of health insurance and payment mechanisms; (2)Êeconomic incentives used to improve the quality and economic efficiency of treatment and prevention services (3) alternative delivery systems and managed care; (4) cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, or cost-utility analyses; (5) service costs, production, and economic efficiency; and (6) research to develop or improve methods to be used in the economic study of drug and alcohol services The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.ÊThe R03 is intended to support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources.
