Grant Description
-Purpose. The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage submission of investigator-initiated research applications on the thyroid in aging. This FOA is intended to promote basic, translational, and clinical studies leading to increased understanding of the physiology of the aging thyroid and improved diagnosis and management of thyroid disease in older adults. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-08-037, that solicit applications under the Research Project (R01) grant mechanism, and, PA-08-038, that solicits applications under the Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. -The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.
