Grant Description
The Hope Camp Conservation project aims to provide local Arizona youth with summer employment working on a conservation project at Hope Camp in the backcountry of Saguaro National Park. Youth will help repair a length of fence that marks the boundary between the National Park wilderness and State Trust land. In doing so, they will learn valuable job skills, including but not limited to working as a team under difficult conditions, the safe handling and use of a variety of tools, and Leave No Trace ethics. They will also learn about the ecological impact that domesticated livestock have on the land, and why it is important to conserve wilderness areas, particularly in a unique desert ecosystem like Saguaro. By working with American Conservation Experience (ACE) to complete this project, Saguaro National Park fulfills all three goals of the 21CSC - providing service, employment and educational opportunities to youth, preserving and protecting America's Best Idea, and developing the next generation of active and educated stewards for our parks.
