Grant Description

This project seeks to preserve a unique and irreplaceable collection of historic cannon and related artifacts. These cannon are located throughout the park and are enjoyed on a daily basis by visitors from around the world, increasing public understanding of the military defensive role played throughout the lands of this region for over 200 years. The cannon are predominantly displayed out-of-doors, in an often harsh marine environment with the combined actions of salt air, moisture, and blowing sand attacking the metal gun tubes and metal or wood mounts, causing significant deterioration. Visitors touch and sometimes vandalize the guns, resulting in deteriorated surface details. The cannons must be moved to a different environment where they may be more practically preserved and safely enjoyed. The GGNPC and the NPS have a common historic preservation and park enjoyment philosophy that protects park resources while yet making them available for maximum public education and enjoyment. As a result of this project, the cannon collection will be refined to highly pertinent artifacts to our park locations, displayed correctly and safely, physical conditions improved, and long-range condition management implemented.
