Grant Description

This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service (NPS), intention to fund the following project with Alaska Geographic Association under the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit program. The Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit are partnerships that provide research, technical assistance, and education. Education is a national priority for the National Park Service (NPS). NPS and Alaska Geographic (AKGEO) wish to cooperate with one another for their mutual educational purpose and for the general benefit of the people of the United States who see the exhibit. It is within the missions of both organizations to create interpretive information to provide the public the opportunity to forge intellectual and emotional connections with Denali. In 2013 the NPS will mark the 100th anniversary of the first climb of Mount McKinley. This project will educate the public about the first successful climb. The NPS will partner with AKGEO to create a portable exhibit that will initially go on display at the Eielson Visitor Center for the 100th year anniversary of the climb. After 2013, it will go on display in Talkeetna and become a traveling exhibit. The exhibit will feature written and hands-on materials that will employ research from previous collaborations. The exhibit will complement other products created for the centennial celebration, as well as events conducted by the park and additional park partners to celebrate the climbing history. ╔ Continuation: - The activity to be funded is necessary to the satisfactory completion of, or is a continuation of an activity presently being funded, and for which competition would have a significant adverse effect on the continuity or completion of the activity. Unique Qualifications: Through its work on previous education products with the NPS, AKGEO has specialized knowledge of the mountain, mountaineering history and existing materials, access to which will be most practicable for this project.
