Grant Description
Complete a Continuously Operating GPS Reference Station for research and monitoring purposes in South Texas anchored around the U. S. Coast Guard. This project will benefit the public by bringing in an excellent conservation partner to: (1) support research on local subsidence, sea level rise, and the responses of the nearby marshes, (2) to develop and implement the data needed to manage coastal marshes as the sea rises and threatens to flood those coastal wetlands, and (3) will be used by the community in GPS based land surveys and will be posted on a public website. The specific objectives of this project are to: (1) establish a Continuously Operating GPS Reference Station (CORS) at the South Padre Island U. S. Coast Guard base for research and monitoring purposes with plans and recommended tools for implementation; (2) help the Service with outreach, education and communication among partner organizations and other stakeholders concerning the need to conserve key habitats proximate to the refuges and related to sea-level rise and subsidence threats that would result in flooding of the coastlines of the world; and (3) provide technical assistance with the research, development and drafting proposals for funding opportunities with Federal, State, and nonprofit organizations.
