Grant Description
RECOVERY;Control of Invasive Plants to Protect Natural Resources at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Cowles Dunes; INDU 131211A; 14-1035. Cowles Dunes contains some of the most unique habitats found in the National Lakeshore including prairie, savanna, bog, fen, and wetland. Invasive plants within a 10 acre area surrounding 0.8 miles of trail segment A west of the Cowles Bog Trailhead would be searched and treated by two SCA's beginning in May. The primary species targeted consist of cattail, tree-of-heaven, honeysuckle, multiflora rose, Japanese barberry, Oriental bittersweet, burning bush, and olive. Treatment methods would include manual cutting and treating stumps with herbicide, as well as foliar herbicide application. If time allows, additional area surrounding the trail would be treated to serve as a buffer to re-invasion.
