Grant Description
a. Background: The Arizona Strip District of the BLM will continue to research, investigate, monitor, inventory, document, educate and promote the respectful use of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail (OSHT). Field investigation of the Armijo Route of the OSHT will be emphasized to locate and document the exact route of this portion of the trail between St. George, Utah and Page, Arizona. The BLM is in need of a partner whose objective is to study, preserve and protect, interpret and educate, and promote respectful use of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and closely related historic routes. Such an organization would promote public awareness of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and its multicultural heritage by encouraging research and publication and partnering with governments and private organizations. The project is not required by the BLM but will assist in locating, documenting, researching and monitoring the OSHT. b. Objectives: The objectives for entering into this assistance agreement are; A. Obtain a better understanding of the cultural resources and recreational opportunities associated with the Old Spanish NHT. B. Assist the BLM in studying, preserving and protecting, interpreting and educating, and promoting respectful use of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and closely related historic routes . C. Assist the BLM in promoting public awareness of the Old Spanish NHT and its multicultural heritage by encouraging research and publications. D. Produce research documents that synthesize previous history and research, report on current research, and provide recommendations for future research, protection and use and for recreational use. E. Provide information to be used in public education and interpretation venues that encourages protection of the historic trail resources and appropriate recreational use.
