Grant Description

Background and objectives: The principal purpose of this program is to support the design, funding, implementation, completion, monitoring, and maintenance of on-the-ground projects designed to enhance, rehabilitate, restore, and when appropriate mitigate fish and wildlife habitat on BLM-administered public lands. Benefits of the program include direct benefit to the public of improved fish and wildlife habitat on public lands for non-consumptive outdoor recreation and hunting purposes. Supported projects could include such things as support for the Wildfire and Invasive Species Initiative. This initiative would help wildlife agencies, such as the BLM, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS, and the Forest Service (USFS), 1) implement the recommendations in the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) Wildfire and Invasive Species Report, (2) integrate State and private interests, (3) develop and conduct a novel analysis that quantifies the direction and magnitude of lek count trends for the Greater Sage-grouse, (4) develop conservation projects, and (5) monitor external funding for these projects. Award of this agreement could also partially support a Coordinator position which would be involved with such projects as 1) conceptual design of the implementation of Sage-Grouse land use plans (LUPs), 2) developing a companion Resistance and Resilience Decision Support Tool for the portion of the Greater Sage-Grouse range east of the Rocky Mountains, 3) defining and developing of adaptive management and mitigation strategies as called for in the Sage-Grouse LUPs, and 4) update and expand Sage-Grouse science. Public Benefit: The proposed support of this program directly benefits the public through improved fish and wildlife habitat on public lands for non-consumptive outdoor recreation and hunting purposes, and by precluding or reducing the need for additional regulatory burden for Federally-listed species. Fish and wildlife-related recreation, including fishing, boating, hunting, and wildlife watching contribute billions of dollars annually to the nation's economy.
