Grant Description
The BLM and Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) have been working together to monitor and improve habitat for Cordylanthus maritimus ssp. palustris (Behr) Chuang & Heckard (Point Reyes bird's beak) for more than 4 years and would like to continue with this successful partnership. Point Reyes bird's beak is a USFWS Species of Concern, listed as Endangered by the State of Oregon, considered endangered or threatened throughout its range (list 1) by the Oregon Biodiversity Information Center (ORBIC) and Bureau Sensitive Species with the Bureau of Land Management. Limonium californicum (Western marsh rosemary) is a Bureau Sensitive species and is also listed by the State of Oregon as critically imperiled due to rarity or vulnerability to potential extinction. Both species exist together in tidal flats on the North Spit, North Bend, Oregon. The objective of this project is to continue to census the size and extent of the Point Reyes bird's-beak population, establish a protocol for monitoring the Western marsh rosemary population, and document population trends and interactions of the two species. Knowledge gained will help with developing adequate management plans in order to ensure species survival.
