Grant Description

The historic Cape Blanco Lighthouse, located 60 miles north of the Oregon/California Border, is the southern-most lighthouse in Oregon. Access to the light house for public tours and interpretation was authorized in April of 1994 when the U.S. Coast Guard granted an interagency permit to the Bureau of Land Management. The current permit is effective until January 31, 2019. Participants in the cooperative management are BLM, Confederated Tribe of Siletz Indians of Oregon, the Coquille Indian Tribe, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, which includes the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, the Heritage Society, and Curry County. The objective of this project is to support cooperative preservation, protection and management efforts at the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. Under the direction of the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office and an experienced lighthouse architect, a maintenance plan for the Cape Blanco Lighthouse was developed. Following this plan will be for routine and deferred maintenance, including painting and other associated needs according to Oregon State Historic Preservation guidelines. Additional work may be necessary to improve the interpretive displays and associated visitor center.
