Grant Description
BLM California NLCS units consists of national monuments, national conservation areas, wildernesses, wilderness study areas, wild and scenic rivers, national scenic and historic trails, and the conservation lands of the California Desert. The System was established by Congress in the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009 P.L.111-11. The law was enacted to conserve, protect, and restore nationally significant landscapes that have outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values for the benefit of current and future generations. The NLCS brought into a single system specially designated areas managed at a landscape level under the BLMs multiple use mandate. The 174 NLCS units in California include: 87 wilderness areas 3.8 million acres 69 Wilderness Study Areas 1.1 million acres 8 wild and scenic rivers 100 miles 4 National Scenic and Historic Trails 580 miles 3 National Monuments 360,000 acres 1 National Conservation Area 57,000 acres Headwaters Forest Reserve 7,400 acres 1 Outstanding Natural Area 19 acres Conservation Lands in the CA Desert
