Grant Description
The Salmon River CCS sourcing project involves conducting geochemical analysis of lithic source samples and making comparisons with artifacts from archeological sites. Within the Plateau culture area the primary source of lithic material is CCS as opposed to obsidian and over 90 percent of lithic artifacts recovered from archeological sites are made of CCS. A non-destructive, standard and repeatable method is needed to compare sources to artifact samples. The methodology must be able to be replicated by other entities such as academic institutions, tribes, cultural resource contractors, and federal agencies. The project is in north-central Idaho.
