Grant Description

The Cedar City Field Office has funding available to work with a partner under the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit to stimulate the restoration of the historic Sand Cliff Signatures and historic trail features of the Old Spanish Trail in Fremont Canyon, Iron County, Utah. Specific elements of the project include: recruiting volunteers, establishing contact with ancestors of the signatures, recording the inscriptions on an archaeological site form, recording the signatures with Close-Up Photogrammetric Techniques listed in BLM Technical Note 428 (Page 15), removing at least 20 modern inscriptions, conducting at least 25 acres of archaeological/trail survey in Fremont Canyon, conducting at least 5 acres of metal detecting, a public presentation to the local historical society and compilation of all of the work in a cultural resources report and journal article.
