Grant Description

The United States Government represented by the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, Office for Afghanistan and Pakistan, (INL/AP) directs and oversees foreign assistance programs pertaining to rule of law, law enforcement, and justice sector development in Afghanistan. INL programs in Afghanistan have included training local police forces, helping create programs to reduce poppy cultivation, providing educational advancements to the community especially women and children, funding drug rehabilitation centers, and helping create a justice program that the Afghan people can trust. Corrections institutions are a critical component of an effective justice sector, and INL programs aim to assist Afghanistan as it builds the capacity and quality of these institutions. Incarcerated women and juveniles face unique and acute challenges in Afghanistan. Making training and services available to these populations in prison and assisting them as they transition back into society will improve the human rights record of the Afghan correctional system and enable more women and juveniles to lead peaceful, productive lives post-incarceration.
