Grant Description
Georgia: For this solicitation, the proposed program outline should support Georgiaуs national strategy on criminal justice reform with particular attention given to sustainability and for improving the quality of daily court practice demonstrated by criminal defense attorneys. Ukraine: The goal of this project is to train Ukrainian defense attorneys to become effective adversaries under the new Code, conducting investigations, mounting an effective defense, protecting the presumption of innocence, challenging the wide-spread use of pre-trial detention, presenting effective opening statements and closing arguments, conducting witness examinations, and, when appropriate, engaging in plea bargaining. Preparing defense attorneys to investigate, prepare, and argue cases will bolster accountability and public confidence in Ukraineуs rule of law institutions, help move Ukraine closer to European and international standards, and help protect human rights.
