Grant Description

The program provides funding to support for nuclear science, engineering, technology, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. As a condition for receiving trade school or community college scholarships, recipients must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress in their fields of study, as determined by criteria contained in this announcement and as established by the NRC. The nuclear technology related discipline supported by this funding is intended to benefit the nuclear sector broadly. Consequently, NRC requires trade school and community college scholarship recipients to serve 6 months in nuclear-related employment for each full or partial year of academic support. The employment may be with NRC, other Federal agencies, State agencies, Department of Energy laboratories, nuclear-related industry, or academia in the recipientsу sponsored fields of study. NRC may waive, in whole or in part, the service obligation, upon determination that compliance by the individual is impractical. Trade school and community college scholarship recipients who fail to satisfy the service agreement requirements of the program must reimburse the United States Government for the entire amount of the assistance provided them under the scholarship plus interest at a rate determined by the NRC. Recipients must continue to comply with eligibility requirements and institutions must continue to comply with public policy requirements and maintain adequate management systems throughout the period of support.
