Grant Description
The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is offering a funding opportunity to analyze fecal pellets of American pikas collected from various locations from across the western USA to estimate approximate age. Quantitatively estimating the pelletsДкк antiquity will indicate when pika last occupied various talus patches will ideally allow collectively to temporally define how pika distributions have shifted spatially over time. Ideally, to develop databases of pika habitat range, occupancy, and pellet ages, as well as integrating these various datasets to attempt an understanding of pikasДкк distributional change. Also to prepare maps using data prepared from aging the fecal pellets and estimating pika distribution and compare it to maps of past pika distribution. The fecal pellets should be analyzed using radiocarbon analysis and reported date ranges should be made with 95% confidence intervals and take into account the analytical error associated with each measurement
