Grant Description
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Wildlife Program is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner to support of monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) conservation through actions which (1) create and maintain effective partnerships and (2) provide relevant, quality, timely research to resource managers. The eastern population of the monarch butterfly has reached historic lows, with an estimated population of 42 million in the winter of 2014-15, after a 20-year average of more than 230 million. The population decline has led to a petition to list the species under the Endangered Species Act, which the US Fish and Wildlife Service is currently considering. There is great interest among a range of organizations in improving the condition of monarch butterflies.
