Grant Description
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for scientific research and technical assistance involving the use of Next Generation sequencing for pathogen discovery in wildlife. Investigation of wildlife disease can be separated into three phases: pathogen detection/discovery, disease ecology research, and development/deployment of management tools. The USGS к National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) conducts all of these activities, in concert with partnering agencies, during the investigation of morbidity and mortality events in wild animals. Typical mortality event response procedures include examination of carcasses (necropsy), application of pathogen detection assays, and potential field response. To enhance pathogen detection capabilities, the NWHC is exploring the use of Illumina-based Next Generation sequencing technologies to identify novel pathogens unidentifiable by other more traditional means.
