Grant Description
The US Geological Survey, USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN) is offering a funding opportunity to enhance scientific understanding of how climate variability is linked to phenology across broad spatial scales, with the ultimate goal of being able to predict phenology based on meteorological and climatological forecasts. A necessary step towards achieving this long-term goal is the development of gridded surface products at regional to continental scales (10 km to 10,000 km), which in turn may ultimately be used for carbon cycle, understanding climate impacts on ecosystems, and modeling and for informing natural resource management. The specific shorter-term goal of this effort is to develop and distribute gridded, national-scale products for the suite of Spring Indices (SI) developed by Schwartz et al. (2012a), to be computed from various instrumental datasets at different spatial and temporal resolutions. These data products can be delivered to the USA-NPN in standardized formats; in turn, they can be used to develop decision support tools displayed and provided through the USA-NPN website to support a variety of research and resource management needs.
