The work will primarily involve working in the field collecting bacteriological, chemical, and biological samples as well as in an office setting downloading and entering data and performing quality assurance measures. Field work will involve working in the sun, rain, and varying temperatures in wetlands, flowing waters, and the near shore of Lake Michigan while handling fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. The position will be supervised by the Environmental Protection Specialist at INDU. The intern must provide their own transportation as well as locate their own housing. The NPS will provide all necessary training and orientation to the park, its offices, and work sites. Staff and interns report to work 40 hours per week. The project goals are to: 1) Conduct routine water quality monitoring by collecting chemical, biological, and bacteriological samples; and 2) Ensure the quality of data by following the established technical protocols, appropriately maintaining all field and lab instruments and routinely performing quality assurance measures.
