REQUEST FOR INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL PROJECT TO BE INITIATED THROUGH Nicodemus National Historic Site Funding Opportunity Number: FY2014-NICO-YIFM-0001 Park: Nicodemus National Historic Site 510 Washington Ave. B1, Nicodemus, KS 67625 Project title: 2014 Youth Intern: Facility Management Proposed Project Date: 5/27/2014 п 8/25/2014 (12 week intern) Estimated funding available: $6,800.00 Number of Positions Available: 1 (one internship) Summary: This position will work at Nicodemus National Historic Site performing a number of facilities related projects. These will include a preservation project on the Township Hall, (which is also the Visitor Center), a sustainable turf project, preparation, set-up, take down and moving into a temporary Visitor Center for the biggest park function of the year, the Homecoming Celebration. Background: Nicodemus, Kansas is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. It is symbolic of the pioneer spirit of African Americans who dared to seek personal freedom and the opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities on the Great Plains. Nicodemus, Kansas is located in the high plains of northwestern Kansas, 13 miles east of Hill City and 21 miles west of Stockton, each with populations of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 people. There are reasonable housing options available in the nearby towns of Bogue (5 miles), Hill City, and Stockton. Hill City and Stockton both have grocery stores, libraries, and limited restaurant facilities. Hill City is the Graham County seat, and does have a hospital. Due to its rural location having a vehicle for transportation is necessary. Possible Projects and Work Activities for 2014: ╔ Assist trained preservation craftsmen with a rehabilitation project on the Township Hall, to include photo documentation and hard copy documentation. ╔ Serve as the lead on the Parkуs Sustainable Turf project, to restore Buffalo Grass in the Park Boundary. ╔ Become a part of the biggest Park event of the year - the Annual Homecoming Celebration / Emancipation Proclamation. Skills desired: Computer knowledge п EXCEL, WORD, etc. Safe operation of hand and power tools - competent with supervision Educational background desired: Resource Management - some coursework or experience Project Management - some coursework or experience Historic Preservation - some coursework or experience Landscape Architect - some coursework or experience Communications - some coursework or experience The work can be physically demanding, requiring long periods of standing, walking, lifting moderately heavy items and working in weather extremes. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, Work on weekends may be required. Materials Requested for Statement of Information/Qualifications: Please prepare a Statement of Information (three-page maximum) including a summary of how you would implement and manage this project in conjunction with NPS staff. Include your name, organization, and contact information, a brief description of the organization and mission, as well as a description of relevant qualifications and experience with recruiting and placement of youth interns, past projects, and staff, faculty, or students who would be available to work on the project. In conjunction with the Statement of Information you are also required to submit a preliminary bid. The Statement of Information and preliminary bid will be reviewed by the NPS in order determine the organization best suited to provide services for this specific project.
