Grant Description
NOTICE OF INTENT: San Diego Institute for Conservation Research/San Diego Zoo Global has been involved in efforts to reestablish a California condor population in Baja California, Mexico since 2000. Prior to release of condors in the wild, they conducted an extensive site evaluation (including a 2-year assessment of lead in the environment), conducted outreach efforts in surrounding communities, and facilitated an historic MOU between the U.S. and Mexican governments pledging cooperation and support for the re-establishment of condors in Baja. Since they released the first condors in Baja in 2002, the have conducted scientific management of the released population, applied research on their behavioral ecology, continuous monitoring of nesting attempts, veterinary care and pathology. In 2009, San Diego Zoo Global formalized a partnership with Wildcoast/CostaSalvaje, an NGO that specializes in public outreach and conservation campaigns in Baja California. Wildcoast╔к_s Mexican subsidiary CostaSalvaje now implements most of the outreach program through grants and donations and employs the Mexican field staff, although San Diego Zoo Global continues to fund and oversee the program. Their annual expenditures on the project exceed over $500,000 per year.
