Grant Description
The objective of this Cooperative Agreement is to create a contractual mechanism between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), representing the natural resource restoration interests of the Kure/Stuyvesant Trustee Council, and the City of Arcata to implement restoration activities to compensate for injuries as a result of discharges of oil (by persons not party to this Cooperative Agreement) from the Stuyvesant/Humboldt Coast Oil Spill and the Kure/Humboldt Bay Oil Spill. The City of Arcata’s McDaniel Slough Project will restore tidal wetland functions to 212 of 252 acres of former tidal salt/brackish marsh and freshwater wetlands adjacent to Humboldt Bay in northern California. The remaining acreage will be enhanced and managed as freshwater and brackish ponds, and grassland/riparian areas. The project also includes trails, wildlife viewing structures, benches, and information kiosks. The project will create a mosaic of vegetated habitats, mudflats, tidal sloughs, and other intertidal wetlands which will benefit a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. Fish and invertebrate species will also benefit from the enhancement of McDaniel Slough/Janes Creek, which includes removing barriers to fish access, deepening historic slough channels, partial removal of failing or obsolete levees, and restoring the tidal estuary. The project area is owned by the City and the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG). The City of Arcata is responsible for implementing the project under a cooperative agreement with the CDFG.
