Grant Description

The purpose of this award is to continue and expand Caddo Lake Institute’s (CLI) conservation and education activities conducted during prior fiscal years through 1) science, conservation, and education, and 2) the promotion of the goals and principles of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance at Caddo Lake and elsewhere. To achieve this goal, the Recipient will 1) expand the Ramsar designation to additional Caddo Lake wetland areas in Texas and Louisiana as well as other wetland areas in the US; 2) promote Ramsar designation and use of Ramsar principles at Caddo Lake; 3) support the work of the U.S. National Ramsar Committee (USNRC); 4) coordinate the on-going in-stream flows project by managing the work aimed at assuring adequate flows to the Caddo Lake Ramsar wetlands; 5) participate in the ongoing state- and federally-sponsored watershed protection plan (WPP) for Caddo Lake which is aimed at addressing impairments of the water quality in the watershed; 6) assist in the response to other threats to Caddo Lake and associated wetlands, such as invasive species and oil and gas production; 7) expand the opportunities for tourism and other economic development needed to assure public support for the local Ramsar site and related conservation efforts; and 8) participate in the new Corps of Engineers Watershed Study for the Cypress River Basin.
