Grant Description
There are 37 at-grade highway-rail crossings in San Angelo, Texas, that will be reconstructed using $1,000,000 from the Railroad Relocation and Improvement Program and other funds. The existing at-grade highway-rail crossings include 33 wood surfaces, 2 asphalt surfaces, and 2 combination wood-asphalt surfaces. When completed, all 37 reconstructed crossings will have concrete surfaces. The existing crossings present safety and operational difficulties to train operations. The majority of the crossings are constructed with 90# (or smaller) rail with cross ties dating from the 1950?s. The rail is severely worn at many spots and the underlying defective tie conditions allow significant vertical deflection of the track as well as gauge deviations when under load. Reconstructing the crossings with new subgrade, drainage, ties, ballast, rail, securements, and panels will improve train operations and greatly reduce the likelihood of derailments at these locations.
