Grant Description
Fundamental to monitoring, management and conservation of endangered species is the ability to identify them in the field. Across much of its range the federally listed endangered salt marsh harvest mouse (SMHM) is sympatric with the morphologically similar non-endangered western harvest mouse (WHM). In southern San Francisco Bay, correct identification of harvest mice species stands at ~50%, with the rest misidentified, or categorized to genus only. The proposed research will determine if field species identification can be improved through analyses of external morphological characters from genetically identified salt marsh harvest mouse and western harvest mouse. This grant is awarded under the authority of the Fish and Wildlife Act of 1965, as amended.
